Who Microsoft 365 Family is for

Microsoft 365 Family suits households and families where several people use Office and everyone wants their own files and storage. Think of parents with school-age children, or housemates splitting the cost. Everyone works on their own devices and keeps their own documents separate, while you manage everything from one subscription. With Microsoft Family Safety, you can also keep an eye on your kids' screen time and online activity.

When Microsoft 365 Family isn't the best choice

Microsoft 365 Family is built around sharing with several people. Using the subscription on your own means paying for seats you don't use. In that case, Microsoft 365 Personal makes more sense: the same apps and 1 TB of storage, but for 1 user.

Mostly working on one PC and offline, and don't want a yearly subscription? Then Office 2024 fits better: a one-off purchase that keeps working permanently on one device, with security updates but no subscription, Copilot or cloud storage.

Family or Personal, which one suits you

Choose Microsoft 365 Family if:

• you want to share it with up to 6 people
• everyone wants their own account and their own 1 TB of storage (up to 6 TB combined)
• you want to use Microsoft Family Safety to keep an eye on your kids

Choose Microsoft 365 Personal if:

• you're the only one using the subscription
• 1 TB of storage is enough for you
• you want to work across your own devices

What stood out when ordering and activating

The licence code was in our 2GO Software account straight after ordering. Activating was simple through setup.office.com: you sign in with a Microsoft account (or create one for free), enter the code, and you're done. During activation, Microsoft shows a step about recurring billing. You can simply skip it, so you're not tied to anything.

Installing on Windows

Via account.microsoft.com you go to the Subscriptions tab and install every desktop app at once with a single click. What stood out to us: installation took longer than most software. That makes sense, since you're pulling in several large programs in one go. You sign in once and you're logged into every app after that. Switching from Office 2024? Remove those apps first before installing Microsoft 365. Not in the mood to install anything? Use the free web versions at office.com.

Renewing without losing a single day

We tested and confirmed this ourselves. Activate a new code on the same email address while your subscription is still running, and Microsoft adds your remaining time on top of the new period. So you don't have to wait for your subscription to end, and you don't lose a day.

6 times 1 TB of storage in OneDrive

With Microsoft 365 Family, every user gets their own 1 TB (1000 GB) of OneDrive, up to 6 TB combined. Everyone's files stay separate and sync instantly across their own devices. Handy detail: you can also automatically back up the photos and videos from your phone to OneDrive.

Copilot and AI credits

Copilot is the built-in AI assistant in Microsoft 365. In Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, Copilot helps you write, rewrite, summarise and analyse data. With Microsoft 365 Family, Copilot is available to the main account holder of the subscription: they get 60 AI credits a month, where each action in the apps costs 1 credit and unused credits expire monthly. The other family members have full access to all the apps and their own 1 TB, but don't use Copilot within the apps. If a family member wants that too, they'll need their own subscription.

The apps you get

For every user, on all their devices: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Teams (consumer version), Clipchamp, Designer and Microsoft Family Safety. On Windows only, you also get Access and Publisher. Note: from October 2026, Microsoft is discontinuing Publisher. As a subscriber, you'll no longer be able to install Publisher or open and edit Publisher files in Publisher after that. If you want to keep your files, save them as PDF or Word in good time. Working on a Chromebook? Then you don't install anything, you just use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive and Teams through office.com.
